Thoughts on NaNoWriMo

It wasn’t as prevalent this year as the previous year.

Last year wasn’t even as prevalent as 2018.

But writers are still being inundated with deceitful tweets:

“If you wrote even one word during NaNoWriMo, you won.”

No, you didn’t. Here’s why the people who are writing this are fooling you.

NaNoWriMo is intended for writers to write a complete novel during the month of November. Not a word, a novel. And it’s aimed at the bare minimum word count to write that novel – 1,667 words a day for 30 days.

If properly planned, this isn’t a struggle. I’ve forced myself to write 3400 words in a single night.

You just need to know what you’re going to write.

Finishing your novel – then telling others it’s okay to fail – is unethical. It’s ensuring you have less competition at the finish line.

Help struggling writers. Don’t lie to them.

They WANT to finish their novels. Help them do it.

Instead of helping yourself by eliminating competition.
