Honesty In Screenwriting

Some very thought provoking articles about writers who lied. Apparently, there’s more and more people shooting themselves in the foot by going around Hollywood claiming to have talked to so and so about their script, and one enterprising person actually used a voice disguiser to fake being film stars and producers and asking one of the smaller agencies, “Why aren’t you just buying his script?” Well, because apparently it’s pretty bad!

It’s important to understand – heed this warning. Apparently, if you lie like this, your career in Hollywood cannot be recovered unless you go through extensive plastic surgery and change your name, like in a 70’s TV movie. They call it the career black hole.

How does this extend to those who read my blog and are writers? Agents talk to agents. Publishers trade notes and stories. You don’t want to be the “Hey, there was a guy who…”

It’s important to understand this. I know you want it. I know you’re desperate to get your books published, to get your scripts sold. Me too. I understand.

But do this right. You are responsible for your career. Integrity is a coin that can only be spent once and never earned back.

By maintaining integrity in this field, you will rise above and become the kind of person people want to work with.
