Allow me to address a common problem among some writers.
There is a tendency in some writers to be iconoclasts. To wish to break all the rules.
Fine. You do you. But let me warn you first what that means.
First of all, I post advice to writers. I do it on purpose. I saw what turmoil some go through who don’t know how to write, and they can’t complete a novel no matter how much they try.
I know why, I give advice how to do it. You just have to try it. Doesn’t work, no problem, move on.
Next, I’ve carefully researched. There are videos you can buy where industry insiders tell writers, “This is what we look for.”
Translation: We know what sells. We know what doesn’t sell. I will only buy blah blah blah.
Listen to the blah blah blah. They’re telling you “I will not buy novels that violate these conditions.”
Some writers immediately react iconoclastically. They want to smash that idol. “I wanna do what I wanna do.”
Industry response: “Fine. I won’t buy your novel.”
And there you have it.
The industry says, “Do these things and I am far more inclined to buy your novel. Don’t do these things, and I will not.”
I listen, take note. I warn you or advise you.
Some writers: “I wanna do what I wanna do.”
Fine. You do you.
I will get published.
You will not.
When I say, “don’t do this…” I’m saying it because I’ve heard editors and literary agents saying they won’t buy a book that does this.
When I say, “do this”, it’s because I’ve heard editors and literary agents say, “A book that does this is far more likely to be bought.”
Not trying to control you.
I’m trying to help you.
I’m not a misogynist. I’m not dogmatic. Not controlling. Don’t care if you rant against me.
I’m sharing what I’ve learned TO HELP YOU.
Reject this information at your own risk of rejection.
I will get published.
You will not. You do you.
Have a nice day.
